Girls as Merchandise

Slavery is still a major problem worldwide. The Nepalese Urmila Chaudhary was sold at the age of 6 to work as a house-hold slave, kamalari. From early in the morning until evening, she was exploited and abused. Although the kamalari system has been prohibited by law in Nepal since 2000, girls and young women in rural areas are still widely sold to work as a house slave. Urmila, who managed to escape from her miserable situation at the age of 18, is determined, together with Plan Netherlands/ Nepal, to put an end to these practices. "Rights cannot be achieved by asking. Therefore, we must fight for the rights of girls." Despite numerous threats, it continues to fight tirelessly.
