‘The threat is frightening, you are never 100% safe here.’ Tropical doctor Nanda Blansjaar lives here life in the midst of the devastating civil war in South Sudan. People are fleeing violence. Severe malnutrition, rape and gunshot wounds are daily fare for the young doctor. How does Nanda maintain her optimism and strength to continue in an almost hopeless situation? Even recently on April 15, 2023, heavy fighting broke out between the government army and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. The conflict has plunged the country into a permanent humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people have died and millions have fled. The already fragile health system is under enormous pressure, as hospitals have been destroyed and medical aid is blocked. As a result, many people in Sudan have, still, hardly any access to care.
